Before I started my own journey, I had no idea what to expect from counselling. Now that I am a therapist, I can truthfully tell you that every single session and every single client's needs are different. Some people seem to think that therapists only listen, while others I speak to wonder if our only job is to give out coping skills. I’m sharing a secret to therapy, there is no size that fits all! I am so happy to say that the norm is that anything can happen!
For instance:
o humour
o silence
o modelling
o metaphors
o exploration
o role playing
o art exercises
o self disclosure
o active listening
o review ideal self
o list pros and cons
o dream interpretation
o healthy confrontation
o facing childhood fears
o have an 'a ha' moment
o dispelling irrational ideas
o identify personal strengths
o practising useful social skills
o bring in your partner/parents
o work through personality traits
o discuss your current coping skills
o searching for where emotions live in you
o locate newer supportive housing
o use trauma focused techniques
o try new skills out of the office
o explore local legal supports
o review personal finances
